On the event's opening day, the Beijing-based company Moonshot AI made headlines with the unveiling of a new AI model considered among the best globally. Just two days later, competition heated up when Alibaba announced it had surpassed Moonshot with its own cutting-edge model.
The conference spanned an impressive area equivalent to 20 football fields, showcasing a range of hardware designed to incorporate AI into daily life, including innovative earbuds capable of transcribing meetings. The exhibition was alive with robots engaging in various entertaining activities—dancing in synchrony, preparing cappuccinos, playing soccer, providing massages, and even performing musical pieces on the piano. Among the attractions was a charming AI pet that delighted onlookers.
As the ninth installment of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, this event has solidified its status as a key platform for China to demonstrate its technological advancements in AI. The country appeared unshaken by U.S. sanctions that limit access to top-tier AI chips and manufacturing technology.
"It's exhilarating to be at the forefront of this industry," remarked a business development manager from Alibaba at their booth.
While some humanoid robots showcased intriguing possibilities for AI applications, it was noted that their capabilities often lean more towards entertaining tricks rather than practical household functions. In a clear indication of the impact of U.S. export restrictions, Moonshot had to pause new subscriptions for its popular Kimi K3 model due to overwhelming demand that stressed its computing capabilities.
