During a recent appearance at the VivaTech conference in Paris, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is more likely to lead to a labor shortage than to eliminate human jobs. Alongside David Limp, the CEO of Blue Origin, Bezos participated in a discussion prompted by former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino, who inquired about the integration of Bezos's new AI initiative, Prometheus, with Blue Origin's engineering efforts.
Bezos voiced his opposition to the common narrative that AI will make human workers obsolete, stating, “I totally disagree with this perspective. AI will actually create a shortage of labor because it will enable people to identify a greater number of problems.” He emphasized that the potential for invention is vast, suggesting that current limitations stem not from a lack of imagination but from practical execution capabilities.
His comments come against a backdrop of rising layoffs attributed to the adoption of AI technologies. According to a recent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, out of over 97,000 job eliminations recorded in May, AI was cited as the primary reason for nearly 39,000 of those cuts—amounting to 40% of the total layoffs. This trend marks the third consecutive month of escalating job losses, with AI cited as a significant factor.
Andy Challenger, the firm’s expert on labor and workplace trends, remarked, “The labor market is being reshaped by technology in real time.” He highlighted that the tech sector is at the forefront of layoffs this year, having experienced the sharpest reductions since early 2023, despite maintaining the most robust hiring intentions.
Further illustrating public sentiment, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that over half of Americans are concerned about the possibility of losing their jobs to AI advancements.
In governmental developments, the Trump administration has adopted a supportive stance toward the AI sector. Earlier this month, President Trump signed an executive order allowing AI labs to voluntarily share their models with the government for a maximum of 30 days prior to their public release, signaling a move toward closer collaboration between the tech industry and policymakers.
