Baltimore City Public Schools has announced a collaboration with OpenAI, allowing educators within the district to utilize the innovative ChatGPT for Teachers platform.
In a statement released on Thursday, OpenAI recognized Baltimore City Public Schools as one of the latest educational districts to partner with the company to examine how artificial intelligence can be integrated into classroom learning.
CBS News Baltimore has contacted the school district for comments regarding this collaborative initiative.
OpenAI originally launched ChatGPT for Teachers to a network of 150,000 educators and educational staff throughout the United States in 2025. “Our mission is to provide teachers with a dedicated space to experiment with AI, identify its practical applications, and influence its deployment in the education sector. Today, we’re extending this initiative to an additional 55 school districts in 20 states, introducing ChatGPT for Teachers to over 100,000 more educators and staff members,” the company shared in its announcement.
Some of the key benefits of ChatGPT for Teachers in educational settings include assisting teachers in modifying lesson plans, drafting communications for families, preparing materials for substitute teachers, and streamlining administrative tasks. These features are intended to empower educators to focus more on their students' needs.
OpenAI emphasizes its commitment to privacy within this platform. Data from an analysis conducted from January 1 to July 16 revealed that educators sent over 1.9 million messages related to time-saving efforts. This included 900,000 messages about report cards and progress reports, 800,000 related to lesson planning, and over 100,000 inquiries concerning substitute plans and evaluation materials.
With the introduction of this tool, OpenAI has enhanced "privacy infrastructure" to ensure responsible AI adoption across districts. ChatGPT for Teachers is equipped with education-grade privacy, security, and administrative controls, the company states.
Data shared in the ChatGPT for Teachers environment is not employed for training OpenAI's AI models by default. Furthermore, school administrators can create a secure, managed workspace for teachers to collaborate. The tool also features "role-based controls" designed to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which mandates the protection of student privacy for federally funded educational institutions.
In addition to Baltimore City Public Schools, ChatGPT for Teachers has recently been rolled out in 54 other school systems across 20 states, according to OpenAI.
The company asserts, “AI in education is most effective when teachers are at the forefront. Our aim is to equip them with the tools, trust, training, and voice they need to excel.”
