In Beijing, bar owner Song De sees intriguing parallels between artificial intelligence and alcohol: hallucinations, bubbles, and distillation. As excitement around AI rapidly grows in China, he aims to leverage this momentum through his establishment.
Last year, Song launched AGI Bar in Zhongguancun, Beijing's dynamic tech district known for its innovation. Named after artificial general intelligence, the establishment has quickly become a gathering place for the city’s AI community, including developers, investors, and students.
"You'll find groups seated around tables, engaging in discussions from various labs, competing firms, and universities, all focused on the latest industry developments," shared Song, who is also an independent AI developer in his 30s and manages the bar in his free time.
AGI Bar is conveniently located along Zhongguancun's Inno Way startup corridor, just a short distance from prestigious institutions like Tsinghua and Peking University, known for cultivating China's elite AI talent. It's also near the offices of prominent tech companies, both Chinese and international, such as DeepSeek and Microsoft. The bar has hosted events for Chinese AI research labs like Z.ai and regularly organizes seminars for developers, open-source AI gatherings, and university research collaborations.
"This location is incredibly unique and beneficial," noted Song. "Haidian district has traditionally been the center of scientific research in China. With a concentration of internet companies, a thriving tech culture, industry investments, and venture capital incubators, there is substantial energy fueling this sector."
The interior of the bar is adorned with logos, vibrant figurines, and merchandise from leading AI companies in China. Notably, a massive brass gong, used by Z.ai to celebrate its debut on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in January, stands proudly by the entrance, symbolizing the bar's connection to the evolving tech landscape.
