Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced on Monday its plan to acquire World Labs, an AI research facility based in San Francisco and founded by renowned pioneer Fei-Fei Li, for a total of $8.2 billion.
The semiconductor giant, which had previously invested in the startup, will complete the transaction through stock rather than cash.
Fei-Fei Li, a former Stanford professor and notable figure in AI research with a background at Google, is set to join AMD as the chief scientist and executive vice president. This strategic move comes as AMD aims to enhance its position in the competitive AI processor market, where it is currently trailing Nvidia.
World Labs is at the forefront of developing a groundbreaking technology known as a world model, which enables the simulation of 3D environments. During a demonstration held earlier this year, Li and AMD CEO Lisa Su unveiled a World Labs creation called Marble, which showcased the ability to generate intricate 3D scenes from just a handful of images.
Li emphasized the practical applications of this technology, stating, "Intelligent agents, whether they're robots, vehicles, or other tools, can gain experience in richly detailed, physics-based digital environments before being introduced into the real world, significantly enhancing their safety."
