Shares of prominent Chinese technology firms Alibaba and Baidu experienced a significant uptick on Thursday following their collaboration with Apple to implement their artificial intelligence tools. Alibaba's shares, listed in Hong Kong, surged by 5% after the company announced that its Qwen AI model would be incorporated into Apple’s services within China. In the U.S., Alibaba's shares also closed slightly higher after a spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that "Qwen will be integrated into Apple Intelligence experiences across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS for users in China."
Baidu's shares in Hong Kong climbed by 4% as the company revealed its ongoing partnership with Apple to develop AI features for iPhones available in China. This collaboration comes on the heels of reports from late June indicating that Baidu's AI chip division, Kunlunxin, is eyeing an initial public offering that could value the unit at around $50 billion. In a recent announcement, the Cyberspace Administration of China designated Apple Intelligence, along with several other AI services from companies like Huawei Technologies, as approved service providers for smartphone-based applications.
The partnership between Apple and Alibaba is expected to enhance user experience by allowing seamless access to Qwen's capabilities, such as text and image comprehension and generation, without requiring users to switch between different applications, according to an Alibaba representative. Apple has yet to provide a response to requests for additional comments from CNBC.
