As the debate intensifies regarding the environmental repercussions of the expanding AI data center network across the United States, Google is promoting its initiatives to mitigate negative impacts by enhancing water availability in local areas.

In a blog post released on Wednesday, the tech giant detailed five pledges regarding its water consumption, aiming to restore more water than its data centers consume by 2030. Google also plans to invest in local water infrastructure, explore alternative sources to supply its facilities, and maintain transparency about its overall water usage.

"We're just one of many stakeholders in this sector," remarked Ben Townsend, Google’s global head of infrastructure and sustainability, during an interview with The Verge. "It’s essential for us to present a model that communities can refer to, so if a new data center proposal arises, residents can inquire, ‘Are you implementing these five standards that prioritize the community and watershed?’”

These commitments emerge in response to a growing wave of opposition against the swift expansion of data centers that support the high energy demands of AI technologies. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, recently announced plans to raise $80 billion through stock sales to finance such infrastructure growth. A Gallup poll revealed that over 70% of Americans oppose local data center constructions, with nearly half voicing concerns about their environmental impact, particularly regarding excessive water use.

AI data centers require considerable amounts of water for cooling, with studies indicating that their annual water consumption may rival the global demand for bottled water. Some researchers have criticized Google’s previous claims about its water usage for AI purposes as misleading, arguing that they fail to account for indirect water consumption. This growing awareness regarding resource consumption has prompted numerous industry players to adopt measures aimed at reducing water use and preventing data centers from increasing consumer energy costs.

Defending Google’s track record, Townsend stated, "We make every effort to account for the offsite water footprint, and we believe we have made meaningful progress in minimizing or even eliminating the water footprint from our supply chain through our investments in waterless renewable energy."

In the blog, Bikash Koley, Google’s vice president of global infrastructure, pointed out that utilizing water for cooling can decrease overall energy consumption at data centers. He stated, “In many locations, water cooling can lead to roughly a 10% reduction in energy use when compared to air cooling. While the total water usage by U.S. data centers constitutes less than 1% of the water that Americans use on their lawns, we remain committed to safeguarding local water resources in all aspects of our operations.”

Koley expressed confidence that the company would successfully replenish more water than it consumes within the next four years by investing in projects designed to enhance irrigation and infrastructure. Google also pledges to continue reporting its annual water consumption figures and is exploring sources, including reclaimed wastewater, evident in a recent project in a county in Georgia. Furthermore, it has allocated $17 million towards new water stewardship initiatives across seven different states.

While acknowledging legitimate concerns from communities about potential water depletion, Townsend noted that data centers may not actually consume as much water as many believe. "It wouldn't be accurate to claim that all perceptions are misconceptions; that's simply not the case," he said, advocating for investment to ensure that water utilization by data centers does not escalate into a pressing issue.
